"I think you do a fantastic job preserving our mining heritage. I come from a long line of coal miners from the Lothians and I think it's great that I can head to your museum to find out more about what my family used to do. Thank you so much!"

What We Do

1. Protect

We are custodians of the Grade ‘A’ listed Lady Victoria Colliery site which houses one of the best preserved 19th and 20th century colliery in Europe.

Lady Victoria Colliery is the last recognisable deep coal mine in Scotland. However, the estate is listed on the Scottish national buildings at risk register meaning our site is at risk of complete loss if not addressed through a capital conservation and preservation programme.

2. Educate

As well protecting our unique site and collections, we run a dedicated education programme which aims to engage younger generations with our shared mining heritage, which is at risk of being lost.

3. Engage

We engage a wide range of audiences with our collections through delivering our exciting mine tours, guided by ex-miners who provide first-hand accounts of life underground. We receive extremely positive reviews for our guided tours but we need support in order to keep our mining heritage alive.
