Dignity Alert & Research Forum (DARF)

Registered Charity Number SC039717

DARF (Dignity Alert & Research Forum) is a vibrant organisation based in Edinburgh working to end violence towards women and children in Scotland and Africa. DARF was established in 2007 by Dr Monica Mhoja a lawyer and a human rights activist. Currently, our main focus is to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

DARF is involved in providing advocacy and training on FGM, awareness raising for professionals and affected communities; and supporting research in the area of FGM in Scotland and Africa. Our activities benefit Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities from FGM practicing countries as well as professionals who may come in contact with women who have undergone FGM or children who are at risk of the practice. Our trainings provide frontline officers such as health care professionals, social service, school teachers etc. with the necessary skills (for example, how to identify girls at risk of FGM, the use of appropriate language during antenatal care, safeguarding etc.). This in returns help women open up about their experience to professionals, identify at risk group and raise awareness on FGM.

DARF is the only organisation in Scotland focusing solely on FGM. Our Board members, volunteers and staff include individuals from FGM practicing communities with a wealth of experience and understanding of this particular form of violence against women and girls.
