The Amalthea Trust

Registered Charity Number 1118695

The Amalthea Trust is a UK registered charity (Reg. No. 1118695) founded in 2008 with the specific aim of improving healthcare in Sub-Saharan Africa by promoting and developing the capacity of countries to maintain and fix their own medical equipment, more than half of which, on average, currently languishes in corridors and store rooms either unused or unusable (WHO, 2011).

We run an extremely cost effective program which recruits volunteers from amongst the Biomedical Engineering Technicians (BMETs) who maintain and mend medical equipment at the UK’s NHS hospitals (although we are a private organisation with no direct connection to the NHS), and support them to help deliver training to their counterparts in East Africa. Our current focus is Uganda, where our volunteers teach the practical elements of the first two-year Diploma BMET training course in the country at Kyambogo University in Kampala. This project has been running for four years now and is very well received by all concerned - see our site at:

We are currently trying to raise funds for two new projects. We are aiming to put in place an on going system of in-service training seminars for working hospital technicians, both to support qualified engineers with information and know-how relating to specific items of hospital equipment, and to up-grade the skill sets of less well qualified technicians. We anticipate that this will get even more hospital equipment back into service.

Our second new project is to teach final year nursing and midwifery students in the proper operation and care of commonly used items of hospital equipment at a nursing school in the relatively under-resourced West of Uganda.
